Parque Aconcagua

Alta Montaña
Aconcagua Park

This natural park is home to the highest mountain in the Americas. With breathtaking Andean scenery, it's perfect for both experienced climbers and visitors looking to enjoy short, scenic hikes with stunning views of Aconcagua.

The park is home to the highest mountain in the Americas and the tallest in the world outside the Himalayas: the majestic Aconcagua, standing at 6,962 meters above sea level. Its name is believed to come from the Quechua word “Akonkauak,” meaning “Stone Sentinel.”

Within the park, you’ll find several points of interest perfect for hikers and adventure seekers. For those aiming to reach the summit, various routes require physical preparation and certified guides.

If you’re not looking for a technical ascent, there are accessible day hikes. The trail to the Quebrada del Durazno bridge offers views of the Horcones Lagoon and leads to a scenic lookout over the south face of Aconcagua.

The Visitor Center, located next to National Route 7, is the ideal starting point. Here, you’ll find information about the park’s activities, natural features, and history.

  • Viewpoint 1: Just steps from the visitor center, offers a distant but striking view of the Aconcagua (free access).
  • Horcones Lagoon: Only 2 km from the entrance; glacier-fed and open year-round.
  • Viewpoint 2: Near the lagoon, with a better view of the summit. Easy to reach and highly recommended.

History

This area was once part of the southernmost route of the Inca Empire. Several findings within the park indicate that it served as an Inca sanctuary, the most significant in 1985, when the mummified remains of a child were discovered.

The first recorded ascent of Aconcagua took place in 1897 and was achieved by Matthias Zurbriggen, a 40-year-old Swiss mountaineer.
