Cascada y Tambos de Ranchillos

Alta Montaña Trekking activities

A gentle adventure through the Andes: follow the Ranchillos stream from Uspallata, cross crystal-clear waters, explore ancient Inca remains, and reach the beautiful Ranchillos waterfall — a perfect mix of nature, history, and discovery.

This trail blends the spirit of adventure with Andean history. Just minutes from Uspallata, the path along the Ranchillos stream takes hikers through mountain landscapes, small river crossings, and the archaeological remains of an Inca tambo — once part of the Qhapaq Ñam network.

Access is right before the bridge over Ranchillos Creek, on the right side of Route 7. There’s a safe parking area on concrete platforms. The trail is well-marked and follows the creek closely.

After walking about 1 km, beyond a small hill, hikers reach the sign for the Inca Tambos of Ranchillos. Continue for another 3.4 km along the stream until the confluence of two creeks.

From there, take the right path and climb about 700 meters to reach the Ranchillos Waterfall — but beware of smaller cascades that may appear to be the final one.

About the "Tambos": The tambos were resting and administrative centers of the Inca Empire. Ranchillos stands out for its complex stone architecture and its strategic location, believed to be one of the southernmost administrative points of the Qhapaq Ñam. Sub-activities
