In the heart of Mendoza, the city’s five main squares create an unmissable circuit of history, culture, and nature. With fountains, monuments, and year-round activities, they are the perfect starting point to explore the city.
Independence Square: This is the main square of the city of Mendoza, inaugurated in 1863. It covers 55,000 m² and features an impressive fountain with dancing waters, a municipal theater, the grand coat of arms of Mendoza, and many architectural details that make it an unmissable destination for tourists.
The square hosts numerous cultural activities, and one of its main attractions is the artisan fair.
Chile Square: Named in gratitude for Chile's assistance after the 1863 earthquake, the square is home to a monument symbolizing the friendship and brotherhood between Argentina and Chile. It features statues of the two liberators, San Martín and O'Higgins, whose right hands are clasped on the pommel of a sword.
San Martin Square: Originally called Plaza Cobo or Plaza del Reloj, its name was changed in 1904. A monument of San Martín mounted on a horse, pointing west, was erected to symbolize the direction in which the Army of the Andes crossed the mountains.
Italy Square: Initially named Plaza Lima in recognition of the aid received from Peru, it was later renamed Plaza Italia to honor Italy and Mendoza’s large Italian-Argentine community. The square hosts the "Festa in Piazza" festival between February and March, where the community celebrates Italian customs, music, and cuisine.
Spain Square: Formerly called Plaza Montevideo, it was later renamed Plaza España. Its main monument is made of marble and features a striking figure of a woman symbolizing Spain (strong and powerful) beside a younger woman representing Argentina, a symbol of strength and vitality.
